Why is this different from converting JFIF to JPG?

Because JFIF and JPG are the same format, so that one is a rename. PNG is genuinely different, so this decodes the image and writes it out again in the new format.

Will the PNG look better than the JFIF?

No — the quality JPEG compression already discarded cannot be recovered. What PNG gives you is that no further quality is lost from here on, however many times the file is edited and saved.

Will the file get bigger?

On a photograph, usually several times bigger, because PNG is lossless. On screenshots, diagrams and flat graphics the difference is much smaller, and sometimes PNG is smaller.
