Will WebP work in every browser?

Every current browser reads WebP, including Safari since 2020. If you must support genuinely ancient browsers, serve WebP with a JPG or PNG fallback rather than not using it at all.

Lossy or lossless WebP?

Lossy for photographs — the savings are large and the difference is invisible. Lossless for logos, icons and flat graphics with hard edges, where it is still smaller than PNG.

Does transparency survive?

Yes, in both lossy and lossless mode. That is what makes WebP a real replacement for PNG rather than a partial one.
