Why iPhone Videos Won't Play on Windows (And How to Fix It)

There are two separate problems here, they have different fixes, and most advice online conflates them. Working out which one you have takes a second and saves you a ten-minute conversion you did not need.

The short answer

  1. Open Video Fix in PhotoTray.

Problem one: the container

A .MOV file is a QuickTime container. It is Apple's wrapper, and it is a perfectly ordinary way to hold video — but some Windows players, editors and upload forms reject it on the extension alone without ever looking inside.

On an older iPhone, or on any iPhone set to "Most Compatible", the video inside that .MOV is H.264, which Windows has played natively for over a decade. The video is fine. Only the wrapper is in the way.

The fix is to move the same video stream into an .mp4 container. Nothing is decoded, nothing is re-encoded, no quality is lost, and it finishes in about a second regardless of how long the clip is.

Problem two: the codec

On any recent iPhone recording at default settings, the video inside is HEVC (also called H.265). It stores the same footage in roughly half the space, which is why Apple switched.

Windows cannot decode HEVC out of the box. Microsoft ships it as a Store extension, and unlike the free HEIF Image Extension for photos, the HEVC video package has historically been a paid item — though many PCs from a manufacturer include a free OEM version.

Here is the part that catches people out:

Rewrapping an HEVC video into an .mp4 does not fix it. The container changes; the video inside is still HEVC, and it still will not play.

This is why "just rename it to .mp4" works for some people and not others, and why the advice keeps circulating. Whether it works depends entirely on which iPhone took the video and what settings it was on.

For an HEVC clip, the only real fix is converting the video stream itself to H.264. That means decoding and re-encoding every frame, which takes real time on a processor and costs a little quality.

How to tell which you have

You could inspect the file with a media analyser. The practical answer is to use something that checks for you: PhotoTray probes each clip before it does anything and reports which path it will take, so a folder of mixed old and new footage sorts itself out.

That mixed folder is the normal case, incidentally. Anyone who has had an iPhone for a few years has both.

Codec or convert?

Both are legitimate. They solve different problems.

Install the HEVC extension if the videos only ever need to play on your own PC, in a player that can use system codecs. It is a one-off, and it leaves your files untouched at their original size and quality.

Convert to H.264 if the clip has to play on someone else's machine, go into an editor that cannot decode HEVC, or upload somewhere that rejects it. A converted file plays essentially everywhere with no codec required, and it will keep playing in ten years.

Converting does make the file bigger — HEVC compresses about twice as efficiently — which is the price of universal playback.

Why a local tool matters more here than for photos

Video files are large. That is the whole reason web converters cap them so hard: a free tier that accepts a 4K clip is expensive to run.

Doing it on your own machine has no cap, no queue and no upload, and a phone transfer is exactly the case where those limits bite. It is also the case where the "probe first" behaviour saves the most time — a tool that re-encodes everything unconditionally will spend ten minutes on a clip that needed one second, and will lose quality doing it.

The photos have the same shape of problem

The .MOV files came out of the same transfer as a few hundred .HEIC photos, and those will not open either, for exactly the same underlying reason — a modern Apple format that Windows does not decode by default.

They are worth handling together. One folder rule can convert both the photos and the clips as they arrive, so the next transfer is already usable before you go looking at it.
