Is this the same as developing the raw file?

No. This produces a straightforward, sensible rendering of the raw data — good for proofing, reviewing and sharing. Making creative decisions about exposure, colour and tone is what raw editors are for, and your ARW files are untouched and waiting.

Does it use the embedded JPEG preview?

No. Sony embeds a small preview in the file and some tools take that shortcut, which gives you a lower-resolution image. PhotoTray decodes the raw data properly.

Can I convert a whole memory card at once?

Yes, and that is the intended use. No count limit, no size cap, and it can be made automatic for a folder your card reader imports into.

Are my raw files safe?

They are never modified. Conversion reads them and writes new files elsewhere.
