Is JPEG different from JPG?

No. They are the same format with two spellings of the extension, left over from a time when Windows only allowed three letters. Any software that reads one reads the other — but some upload forms check the extension text rather than the file, which is why this page exists.

Which should I choose?

Whichever the thing you are uploading to asks for. If nothing has specified, use .jpg — it is the more common convention.

Does the EXIF data survive?

The date and camera information can be carried across if you want it. If you would rather it did not travel, Privacy Scrub strips the location or all of it.
